The Importance of a Spring Checkup for Your Sprinkler System

Ensure Spring Has Sprung

Although Texas winters aren’t generally harsh, they can be unpredictable in terms of hard freezes, and the soil beneath your landscape will be the last to thaw. Therefore, starting your sprinkler system too early in the spring can result in damaged pipes. To ensure that this doesn’t happen, you can use a shovel to check if the ground is thawed at least twelve inches deep.

Regain Control of Controls and Programs

Run a check of your irrigation programs and controls to ensure that dates and times are appropriate for your watering needs. This also includes replacing the backup battery in the timer/controller every six months and keeping a watering schedule nearby. Consider hiring an irrigation professional to perform this essential spring checkup.

Check for Obstructions

Debris such as rocks, sand and dirt can shift and settle during the winter, preventing an uneven flow of water out of sprinkler heads. This uneven distribution can cause insufficient water flow in some areas, while others can have too much flow. Not only can this result in wasted water, but also an unhealthy landscape. Inspect your sprinkler heads to ensure they haven’t become buried due to debris accumulating around them during the winter months. Again, hiring a professional will leave less room for error.

Out with the Old

Although sprinkler heads and nozzles are designed to handle normal wear and tear, they are no match for zealous lawn mowers, among other factors. Replace cracked or over-worn components, such as nozzles, heads, pipes or valves. Broken sprinkler system components can wreak havoc on your lawn and gardens, as well as your water bill.

Prioritize the Heart of Your Sprinkler System

The heart of any irrigation system is its valves, as they regulate water distribution throughout your entire sprinkler system. Closely inspect every valve to ensure each one is operational and return them to the closed position.

Be Aware of Water Hammer

Water hammer is the high pressure surge that happens when you first open a valve for the spring season. This initial surge can result in damaged valves and pipe bursts. Therefore, it’s crucial to open the main water valve as slowly as possible to let your pipes fill with water gradually to prevent the costly damage that water hammer can cause.

Perform a Pressure Check

When initially turning on the main water valve, it’s important to ensure that the water pressure is in a safe range for your sprinkler system. If the pressure is too high, you may end up with busted valves, sprinkler head leaks and cracked pipes. If possible, invest in a water pressure gauge to get an accurate idea of the level of your water pressure in your yard. However, hiring an irrigation specialist can take the pressure off your shoulders and give you peace of mind.

See what some of our customers say about us!

  • I had the best experience with this company starting with my very first phone call. To start, the ladies in the office were so friendly and informative and were able to answer all of my questions. The technician that showed up was great!! He was so knowledgeable and answered every question that I had in reference to my sprinkler system and explained what was wrong with my system in a matter that I understood. Before the tech arrived, I had no idea how to work my system and after my appointment, I feel like I am a professional myself. Best of all, I am supporting our local business owners. I will never use another irrigation company again!
